Why keep teens drug free

Vaping/tobacco

Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine. Nicotine is highly addictive and can harm adolescent brain development, which continues into the early to mid-20s. E-cigarettes can contain other harmful substances besides nicotine. Young people who use e-cigarettes may be more likely to smoke cigarettes in the future.

alcohol

Teens are more sensitive than adults to alcohol’s memory-impairing effects, such as impairing balance, motor coordination, and decision-making—alcohol interferes with the drinker’s ability to form memories.

Marijuana

Many teenagers believe that marijuana is safer than alcohol or other drugs. When discussing marijuana with your child, it is helpful to know the myths and the facts. For example, teenagers may say, “it is harmless because it is natural,” “it is not addictive,” or “it does not affect my thinking or my grades.” However, research shows that marijuana can cause severe problems with learning, feelings, and health..

Prescriptions

When taken as prescribed, medicines can prevent, treat, and cure diseases. But when they are misused, they can cause severe physical and mental health problems. Educating teens on the risks associated with prescription and over-the-counter medications may save their life.

Other Drugs

To reduce youth that ever try hallucinogens, meth, cocaine, heroin, or other illicit drugs, CYA strives to educate and prevent teen use of alcohol, marijuana, nicotine, and misused prescriptions.
